Context

Formerly the East Preston Empowerment Academy, AEA is a community-rooted educational organisation serving the Africadian community in Nova Scotia, Canada. The organisation sought a brand identity strong enough to carry its mission into a new era of growth and national visibility. Mcafan worked alongside partner agency Joyeoux Strategic Marketing Services to lead the full brand strategy engagement.

The Challenge

The academy carried decades of community trust but lacked a clear, modern brand expression. The name change from East Preston Empowerment Academy to Africadian Empowerment Academy was itself a strategic act of cultural reclamation. The challenge was to build a brand architecture that honoured the depth of that history while positioning the academy as a forward-looking institution capable of attracting funding, talent, and national recognition.

Our Approach

Mcafan led a full brand strategy process anchored in five pillars: Purpose, Personality, Promise, Positioning, and Essence. We conducted stakeholder interviews across the community, mapped the competitive landscape of educational non-profits in Atlantic Canada, and developed a brand framework rooted in the lived experience of the Africadian people. The brand promise and essence were developed iteratively with leadership until they reflected both aspiration and authenticity.

Scope of Work

  • Brand purpose development
  • Brand personality framework
  • Brand promise and positioning
  • Brand essence definition
  • Messaging architecture
  • Brand guidelines
  • Website strategy (execution by Joyeoux)

Outcome

AEA emerged with a coherent, emotionally resonant brand identity built on the promise of transforming lives and empowering dreams. The rebrand supported a fundraising narrative, enhanced community pride, and positioned the academy for wider national partnerships. The brand platform gave leadership a clear language to articulate the organisation's mission, values, and vision in every context, from grant applications to community addresses.

Mcafan brought rigour and sensitivity to a process that required both. The brand they helped us build is a true reflection of who we are and where we are going.
